The World Pathology Foundation was established in 1969 and the Charter of the WPF is directed to support trainee Pathologists, through Gordon Signy Fellowships, from applicants from countries with limited resources, to obtain expertise in relevant laboratory techniques, with the help of financial grants, to travel to centers of international excellence. Additional activities to promote the standards of Pathology are also supported.

The foundation is administered by a Board of Trustees. The current members of the Board are:

President Dr. Utz P. Merten Germany
Secretary- Treasurer Dr. Marc-A. Viollier Switzerland
Honorary President Dr. Barrie Murphy United Kingdom
Trustees Dr. Robby Bacchus United Kingdom
Dr. Marilene Melo Brazil
Dr. Mikio Mori Japan
Dr. Masami Murakami Japan
Dr. Michael Oellerich Germany
Dr. Henry Travers U.S.A.

The funds of the Foundation have been derived mainly from donations and from the work of the Auxiliary, the latter supporting particularly the Gordon Signy Fellowships (vide infra).

More funds are urgently needed to support the work of the World Association, especially in the task of representing pathology in international bodies. Donations from individuals, corporations and societies are solicited and should be sent to the Treasurer:

The Foundation has provided visiting lectureships to enable senior pathologists to
travel to developing countries in an advisory capacity and visit some of their
hospitals and laboratories. Dr. Evaldo Melo was the first recipient of such a post
followed by Dr. Barrie Murphy who reported, on behalf of the Foundation, from Zaire.
